The Cultural Meaning of Archive

  • Aerial photos and Remote Sensing Imagery have provided the most direct, true and plentiful information about the surface. Not only the specific object has been shown for its profile by these Remote Sensing data, but also the relation between one object and another has been acquired. The conditions at that time have been completely recorded in these aerial photos which give the truest evidence for studying the differences between the past and the present.
  • Maps are another depiction of the spatial information , which includes precise positions, directions and distances between the surface features.
  • Both maps and remote sensing imagery document natural landscape (such as terrain, mountains, and rivers) and human environment (such as land use, village distribution, and administrative boundaries). Maps and remote sensing imagery also annotate what happened in a specific spatial-temporal context and reflect the culture in a place. By looking into maps of the same area, but different time periods, we can understand the environmental, social and cultural transformation in that area. By looking into maps of the same time period, but different areas, we can understand each area’s environmental and developmental traits.
  • The physical life has come to an end for many valuable historical materials which are getting to decay. These materials lack of systematical management and are spread in many places which are not convenient for querying data. If we do not take good care of these valuable data, it might cause unrecoverable damage forever.


  • The purpose of the project is to wildly collect and digitize maps and aerial photos which cover Taiwan and mainland China area.
  • To integrate and build up a distributed temporal and spatial information system, and to support related information application and service.
  • To develop an effective data mining criterion for the huge quantity of temporal and spatial data, and then to promote academic and research environment for the sharing ,value-adding and applying of data.
