Landscape of the American Past proposes to be an atlas of American history that takes advantage of digital tools to represent the past in new ways. Its goals are inclusive, representing the history that Americans hold in common. Landscape provides a kind of glue to hold together all parts of the country, all kinds of students, and all periods of our history. It will help orient new citizens, who grew up somewhere else. It includes every part of the country, so that people can understand that everywhere has a history. Geography helps make sense of history, which can seem completely unrelated to present-day lives; understanding the setting helps us to understand the changes that took place in that space.

Landscape of the American Past is a project of the Digital Scholarship Lab at the University of Richmond.
