USC Spatial Sciences Institute Postdoctoral Scholar Research Associate Positions

The Spatial Sciences Institute at the University of Southern California invites applications for its Postdoctoral Scholar Research Associates Program. We seek recent doctoral recipients from any academic discipline who have applied spatial concepts and technologies in their academic research and have exhibited exceptional ability with a strong record of independent research. The post-doctoral research associates will be selected based on an evaluation of their promise as future academic leaders and they will carry out both independent and collaborative research with Spatial Sciences Institute faculty members. USC’s Spatial Sciences Institute Postdoctoral Scholar Research Associates will be appointed to an initial 12-month term with the possibility that this appointment may be renewed for a second year depending on availability, interest, and performance. These positions come with a stipend of $70,000 and $7,000 each year to support research and associated travel. An additional allowance of up to $3,000 will be provided for relocation costs. The position comes with a strong benefits package that matches the benefits that are offered to faculty, including health care, a dental plan, and vacation time.

Review of applications will begin December 1st and continue until the positions are filled. Applications are only accepted online at http://jobs.usc.edu and candidates must provide a brief (less than one page) cover letter indicating how the postdoctoral scholar position will advance their career pursuits and what (if any) opportunities they see for collaboration with existing Spatial Sciences Institute faculty (see http://spatial.usc.edu/ for a list of current faculty and their research interests), a complete curriculum vitae, a two-page research statement outlining research goals and plans for the period of the fellowship (with attention paid to the impact of the proposed research on the spatial sciences), copies of one or two recent publications, and the names and contact details of three persons who can provide letters of recommendation.

The Spatial Sciences Institute is the hub of spatial thinking and analysis at the University of Southern California. The Institute provides, through the lingua franca of spatial analysis, the critical infrastructure for transformative, collaborative, and cross-disciplinary research, weaving together several of the research clusters at USC and establishing a leadership role worldwide. Much of our current work focuses on the meaning of place, the role of maps, and the various ways in which the science and practice of geodesign can be used to design spatial policies, practices, and technologies that promote placemaking, sustainability, and human well-being. Through our unique Spatial Studies minor, B.S. in GeoDesign, and online Geographic Information Science and Technology, GeoHealth, Geospatial Intelligence, and Geospatial Leadership Graduate Programs we develop the next generation of spatial thinkers, empowering them with capabilities to tackle and solve real-world issues.
