Visa-Exempt Entry

Countries eligible for Visa-exempt entry: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, *Japan, Republic of Korea, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, U.K, U.S.A.
*Japanese Citizen is entitled to validity of passport at least three months.

Requirements

    • A passport valid for at least six months (unless otherwise stipulated by treaty or agreement).
    • A confirmed return air ticket (or an air ticket and a visa for the next destination).
    • No criminal record.

Duration of stay

    • 30 days. The 30 days' duration of stay starts from the next day of arrival and is not extendable.

Landing Visa

Countries eligible for Landing Visas:

Nationals of Hungary, Poland and Slovak.
Holders of USA passport with validity less than six months.

Requirements

    • A passport valid for at least six months.
    • A confirmed return air ticket (or an air ticket and a visa for the next destination).
    • Fill out an application form with two photos.
    • Visa fee of NT$ 1,600 (citizens of countries with reciprocal agreements shall be issued visas gratis) plus a handling fee of NT$ 800; For U.S. citizens: see remarks 2.
    • No criminal record.

Duration of stay

    • 30 days. It starts from the next day of arrival and is not extendable.

Other Information

  • Passengers entering Taiwan through the TTY International Airport may apply for a landing visa at the Visa Office of Consular Affairs Bureau at the TTY International Airport.
  • Passengers who enter Taiwan through the Kaohsiung International Airport shall apply for a "temporary entry permit" at the Kaohsiung Aviation Police Station for temporary permits. These passengers must change the permit to a visa at the Bureau of Consular Affairs or its Kaohsiung Office within three days, or will be subjected to administrative penalty for overstaying.

Remarks

Holders of USA passport with validity less than six months.

  • Passengers shall apply for a visa at ROC Overseas Missions and be charged a special handling fee of equal amount US$131(NT$4,454).
  • Passengers who apply for visas upon arrival at the ports of entry in the ROC shall be charged a special handling fee of equal amount US$131(NT$4,454)plus an additional fee of US$24(NT$800). A single entry visa of which duration of stay is no more than 30 days may be granted.

Climate

Most area of Taiwan enjoys a subtropical climate. The weather is warm and mild all year round, particularly suitable for travel. The temperature is around 13°C ~ 19°C in February.

Transportation

Buses, taxis, and limousine services are available at the TTY International Airport. The costs are approximately NT$1,500 ~ NT$1,800 to get to Taipei from the TTY Airport by taxi.
The rate for taxis in Taipei city is NT$70 for the first 1.25 kilometers and NT$ 5 for each additional 250 meters. A NT$20 surcharge is added between 11p.m. and 6 a.m. In addition, a "waiting surcharge" for each 1 minute and 40 seconds is added to NT$ 5, when the taxis are stopped. Different rates apply in other areas.

Tipping/Taxes

A 10% service charge and a 5% value-added tax are added to room rates and meals.

Banks

Banks in Taipei are generally open Monday-Friday, 9 am to 3:30 pm. All banks are close on Saturday and Sunday.
Notice: Guest House of Academia Sinica only accepts NT dollars in cash and can only provide very limited foreign exchange service (only US dollars to NT dollars). Pleas note that the amount of foreign exchange is not guaranteed. Therefore, it is highly recommended to exchange enough NT dollars in Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TTY).

Shops

Shops, stores, department stores and restaurants in Taipei are generally open seven days a week.
