Dr Yen-po Hou

Dr Yen-po Hou received his doctorate from National Cheng-chi University, thesis on “The Development of the Chinese Maritime Customs along China’s Periphery, 1875-1895” in 2015, he also received his master degree in history from National Chung Cheng University and bachelor in history from National Cheng-chi University. He speaks fluent Japanese and English, and understands Manchurian.

Dr Hou’s thesis presents an explicit descriptive account on the “new functions”, in addition to tariff tax appraisal, of the Imperial Maritime Customs. His thesis allows us to understand more about how Sir Robert Hart established the Custom Houses in Korea, Hongkong and Southwestern China in order to enhance China’s protectorate, centralize the income of the opium tariff tax and ease tensions along the borderlines in southwestern China.
