No. 3, Annual Returns of Trade

Since 1859, the Inspectorate General of Customs started to collect statistical data of China’s international trade. The Returns Department was put in charge of this task and it was renamed the Statistical Department.

Professor Hans van de Ven assembled a team in Nanjing and extracted Table III and IV from all Annual Returns of Trade. The results are 5,280,561 entries.
